Completely agree with this article on the welfare state.
On a similar vein, I'm not sure what the point of paying teachers and nurses etc out of the state purse - and then taxing them - is. Why not give all people who are employed solely by the state a letter at the beginning of their tax code and make their salaries tax free.
Better yet. A flat tax.

I agree. I remember being shocked when they raised taxes for the poorest people at the last budget (I think it was). Not just stupid socialists, but socialists too stupid to even realise when they're making life harder for the very people they're supposed to be looking after. I really think the government are in the biggest state of shambles we've seen for yonks. The ultimate example of incumbant fatige.
